The Autism in Schools project is part of the national Transforming Care project which aims to improve health and social care services to enable more people to live within their own communities with access to the right support at the right time. The lived experience of young people with learning disabilities and/or autism identified that there are "too many missed opportunities" for children and young people with SEND looking for support but failing to meet the criteria for statutory services.
The Autism in Schools project was initially part of the North Cumbria and North East transforming care accelerator project and due to its success, it is being rolled out across the rest of England during 2021/2022. The aim of the project was to address specifically the issue of mainstream schools failing to respond to the needs of autistic children and young people.
TPF worked in collaboration with Trafford to submit an expression of interest for the second phase of the Autism in Schools Project in Greater Manchester and we are delighted to confirm that this has been successful, and we are working in partnership to deliver the outcomes of the Autism in Schools Project in Trafford.
The core aim of the Project is to develop a 'whole school community' understanding of Autism, this will be achieved by the following;
- building relationships and networks of support;
- improving knowledge and understanding of how to support autistic pupils and their families;
- improving individual awareness and skills development by 'understanding myself', and;
- creating capable environments
TPF are committed to working with participating schools and ensuring clear messages about expectations and what will be provided in return. TPF will alongside schools and other key partners will develop and define the purpose and scope of the project and to set out obligations and responsibilities
